Sharing a Dashboard and Its Chat: Viewer and Editor Permissions Explained

Overview

When you share a GoMarble dashboard with another user, that permission automatically carries over to the chat session linked to that dashboard. This means you do not need to grant separate chat access — the dashboard share takes care of it.

How Permissions Are Inherited

Every dashboard share assigns one of two roles:

• Viewer — the recipient can see the dashboard and its linked chat transcript, but cannot make changes.

• Editor — the recipient can interact with the dashboard and its linked chat session.

The role you choose when sharing the dashboard is the same role applied to the associated chat automatically. No extra steps are required.

What Viewers Can and Cannot Do in a Shared Chat

If someone receives Viewer access to your dashboard, their experience in the linked chat is read-only:

• They can read the full conversation transcript.

• They cannot send new messages or modify the chat in any way.

• Any errors that occurred while loading the chat (for example, a temporary connection issue) are still displayed clearly so Viewers are aware of them.

Viewers who navigate around a shared dashboard will not accidentally create a new chat session or update the existing chat link — those actions are reserved for users with Editor access or higher.

What Editors Can Do

Users who receive Editor access inherit full interaction rights on the linked chat, the same as a collaborator working directly in the original dashboard.

Things to Keep in Mind

• The chat permission inheritance only applies to the specific chat session validated and linked to that dashboard. Unlinked or separately created chats are not affected.

• If a shared dashboard does not yet have a linked chat, Viewers will not see a chat section — no new chat will be created on their behalf.

• If you update the sharing role on a dashboard (for example, upgrading someone from Viewer to Editor), their access to the linked chat updates accordingly.

• If a dashboard is shared but the system cannot confirm the continuity chat link (for example, because the dashboard was created before chat linking was introduced), a warning is shown and the chat section will not be accessible to the recipient. No data is lost — the dashboard itself remains fully shared.

Do I need to share the chat separately?

No. Sharing the dashboard is the only step needed. The linked chat inherits the same permission automatically.

Can a Viewer reply in the chat?

No. Viewers see the transcript in read-only mode and cannot send messages or make any changes to the chat.

What happens if there is an error loading the chat?

Load errors are shown to Viewers even in read-only mode, so they are aware the transcript could not be fully retrieved rather than seeing a blank screen.

Why might the chat section be missing even though the dashboard was shared with me?

Some dashboards created before a recent update do not yet have a confirmed chat link. Until a one-time update is applied to those older dashboards, the chat section will remain dormant for shared recipients. The dashboard owner will see a warning when this is the case.
